President's Christmas Luncheon and boat namings

Our first luncheon at the Cluib since the lockdown was a delightful affair. A good mix of both young and old members, "pudding eights" and five boat namings made the day special. Thanks to John Harry and his wine company Wildfire Wines for the superb wines for the luncheon.

Club rowing takes off

Meghan Hester and her team are doing a great job getting club rowing working well.

Mercantile goes coastal

Coastal Rowing is the extreme version of rowing, and involves rowing on large lakes and the sea. It is one of the fastest growing communities of rowers with excellent opportunities given that flat water is not required.

Para Rowing at Mercantile

Mercantile is indeed fortunate to commence para rowing with two exceptional rowers, and people - Al Viney and Alex Vuillermin. As mentioned above, Al Viney gave an inspiring address to the Mercs camp this month and enjoy training with the able bodied rowers.

Drink wine to help the Club, now that is an idea

Wild Fire Wines is a premium wine producer located near Warburton in the Upper Yarra Valley. One of the owners, and the chief winemaker, is John Harry, a club member. John competed at senior level in the 60s and 70s and was Captain of the Club; he is also a major supporter and Trustee of the Mercs Foundation.

2020-21 Dates

Your Committee is an optimistic mob and have laid down some social function dates for members, even during a 'state of emergency'. Please keep the dates free.

Dredging

Parks Victoria has sought tenders for the regular dredging of the river for the next three years. It appears that at last we may see some relief of the silting issues of recent years.

Beware - GoBoats

The introduction of self drive hire boats on the Yarra has resulted in considerable harm to rowing boats on the Yarra and Mercantile is no exception.

Greetings from Simon Newcomb in Brisbane

Past Captain and great enthusiast of the sport, Simon Newcomb has been in the wars. He has undergone numerous operations to rid himself of cancer and there does not appear to be an end to them. His spirits remain high and his enthusiasm unrelenting. He sends his best wishes to the Club.

Club rowing takes off

Meghan Hester and her team are doing a great job getting club rowing working well. On Thursday night this week four eights, a four and a double hit the water in a superb display of club rowing. It comprised a women's and a men's club eight, a mixed masters eight, a masters men's eight, a club four and a master double. There was a great get together after the row with a sausage sizzle and the bar open. A great night was had by all.

Christmas Luncheon now Sun 6 Dec

The President's Christmas Luncheon has been moved to Sunday 6th December to allow our rowers to attend before going to camp.
