A big two day regatta at Nagambie with prize money attracting some of our NTC athletes down from Canberra. Our Treasurer Duncan MacKinnon will again be in charge of the event as President of the Jury and he will be supported by jury members Graeme Boykett and Andrew Guerin.
A weekend of great racing for the Club on the weekend with our performance group racing on Saturday and the Clubbies on Sunday. Two packed days of competition run under the control of President of the Jury Bill Webster assisted by jury member Andrew Guerin.
The Club is pleased to announce that Club member Rosemary Richardson has kindly offered to donate to the Club a new men's eight and oars in memory of her husband, the Late Ron (Thrasher) Richardson who raced so successfully for Mercantile and her father, the Late Ron March, who was a long standing and highly successful Victorian selector. The boat has been ordered through Empacher and will be delivered later this year.
Our Clubbies and also some of our Club category rowers will be out in force this Sunday on the Barwon with a large entry. It appears that Jordan King and Nick Reynish are determined to win the premierships this year!
Go Mercs.
Another very successful regatta for the Clubbies at Rutherglen last weekend with plenty of wins clocked up and keeping the Club premiership hopes looking good. 10 wins on the Saturday after a slow start and 12 on Sunday.
This weekend we move from the Clubbies to the performance group with 2000m racing at Ballarat. The racing will be conducted under the watchful eye of our Treasurer Duncan MacKinnon as referee, with Bill Webster and Andrew Guerin on the jury.
In years past, we had many entries in the most unusual places where Mercs racing suits were spotted. There were the obvious ones on the rivers of US and UK and then some on the canals in France, Florence and Florida.
Club member Paul Somerville, who doubles up as President of Rutherglen Rowing Club and Chair of the Murray Rowing Association, will be delighted with the huge entry from the Club at his Rutherglen regatta.
It is with great sorrow that we advise of the death of past Captain Bill Wallace this week. Sadly few members will recall Bill as he has lived interstate from the mid 1960s and so only visited the club when in Melbourne.
Whilst the rest of us were relaxing at Christmas, a dedicated group of members rolled up their sleeves and did some necessary work on the Club's oars. Some 200 blades were all prepared, then painted in preparation for a great season ahead.
