Australia has a strong senior team for the World Championships at Racice, Czech Republic in September. It includes seven Mercantile members.

Kat Werry in the women's four

Gus Widdicombe  in the men's eight

Paige Barr in the women's eight

Jess Gallagher and Al Viney in the PR3 four

Jess Gallagher in the PR2 scull

Alex Vuillermin and Al Viney in the women's PR3 pair

Red Matthews in the men's lightweight double

This is a great result. Further it is great to see some members make their debut at the senior Championships and earn their McVilly Pearce pins.

Paul Thompson MBE, High Performance Director said, “The competition for World Championship selection has been fierce for seats on the team.  It is great to see that our team is a mixture of our Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champions and Paralympic athletes and new combinations as well.”  Thompson further commented and said, “With a shortened Olympiad/Paralympiad, this year’s Championships provide an excellent performance and learning opportunity for our athletes before next year’s Paris 2024 Qualification.”

Of note, it is great to see the selectors try out a new men's lightweight double combination given that the combination for the World Cups was making slow progress through the field. Red Matthews will be putting everything on the line again with this combination.

Paige Barr continues her stellar season in a good quality eight which performed well at the World Cups.

And Jess Gallagher makes her return to rowing after a break to compete in cycling at the Commonwealth Games.

Given the perofrmances at the World Cups, there should be medals flowing for Australia.
