Victorian Championships 2023 in Review

Three days of great racing at Nagambie for all racing members of the Club.

Day 1 - Friday 3rd March 2023

Day 1 was a short day for the performance group which formed the basis of State selections and which will continue this week.

Podium finishes were achieved as follows:

Ben Whitmee and Jordan Roberts won the lightweight pairs with Stephen O'Sullivan finishing fourth in a composite crew.

Jake Polkinghorne and Oliver Scalzo won the men's under 21 pair with Ben van den Berg and Jack Ivers in second place.

Remy McKay and Jess Hawker finished second in the women's under 21 pair with Zara Bongiorno and Victoria Trentin in fourth place.

Hamish Nicol finished second in the men's under 21 scull.

Chloe Robinson also finished second in the women's under 21 single.

Austin Reinehr combined with N Smith of MUBC to finish senod in the under 23 pair.

Sister Sophie Reinehr did the same in the women's under 23 pair when she combined with Caitlin McManus-Barrett from Sydney Rowing Club.

Mimi Tuddenham comined with L Foley of MUBC to win the open pair.

Dom Frederico doubled up on his Silver Sculls win at Henley last week with a win in the men's under 23 scull.

This was matched by Paige Barr in the women's under 23 scull with Lou Bongrain closely following in second place and Louise Carr in fourth place.

Dom Frederico and Austin Reinehr got together again to win the under 23 double scull.

This could not be matched by Josh Murphy and Hamish Nicol in the under 21 double scull finishing in third place.

Abigail Cox and Chloe Robinson also finished third in the women's under 21 double scull.

Lou Bongrain was not be denied in the open double scull taking the win with Foley of Corio Bay.

Demi Kyriacopoulos teamed up with Gray of Yarra to finish third in the women's lightweight double scull.

Demi also teamed up in a composite lightweight quad to take a win in that event.

Composite fours were all the go in the women's open four with Sophie Reinehr in the winning crew and Mimi Tddenham in the second placed crew.

Finally, day one finished with Stephen O'Sullivan, Thomas Hastings (Barwon), Jordan Roberts and Benjamin Whitmee taking out the men's lightweight four.

Day 2 - Saturday 4th March 2023

Benedict Edmondson and Lachlan Wilmot (below) finished second in the men's Club Pair.

Olivia Evans and Felicity Murray (below) had the same result in women's club pair.

Jackson Morrish finished third in the men's Club single, (below waiting for the start).

All this being looked after by club members Duncan MacKinnon as referee and in this session, Bill Webster (below) as starter.

Jenisi Kelderman (below) finished second in the women's club single.

And below at the other end.

Joshua Murphy, George Burney, Jake Polkinghorne and Oliver Scalzo, with Jess Rawolle coxing. finished second in the men's under 21 four.

The second four of Hamish NicolJack Ivers, Benjamin van den Berg, Edward Findlay, Theodore Herbst coxing (below) finished fourth.

A similar result befell the women's under 21 four with Remy McKay, Jess Hawker, Zara Bongiorno, Bronte Cullen, with Summer Balla-Kellett coxing finishing second - below.

The second four of Brigit Somerville, Abigail Cox, Victoria Trentin, Olivia Nairn, Isabel Finch coxing beolow finished fitth.

In the men's open eight, a crew containing members from our lightweights, scullers and clubbies of Lachlan Wilmot, Jordan Roberts, Stephen O'Sulivan, Harry Cathcart, Ben Whimee, Ben Edmundson Dom Frederico, Austin Reinehr, Jess Rawolle coxing finished second with a composite crew with Oscar Tyrell on board finished third.

Better results arose for our women's open eight winning the event with Louise Carr, Sophie Coltman, Louisa Bongrain, Sophie Reinehr, Hannah Magasanik, Mimi Tuddenham, Caitlin McManus-Barrett, Paige Barr and Hayley Verbunt coxing.

And at the presentation below.

The men's club eight below of Angus Bodon, Sam Chin, Michael Kelly, Dean Katsivelis, Angus Mclaughlin, Nickolas Kronenburg, Benjamin Worth, Hamish Nicol and Jordan King coxing finished second.

The girls again did one better winning the women's club eight with a crew crew comprising Olivia Evans, Jenisi Kelderman, Eliza Planincic, Felicity Murray, Chloe Robinson, Xanthe Hadfield, Amy Baker, Henrietta Paterson and Genevieve Pittard coxing.

The two winning women's eights made quite a sight at the presentations.

The men's under 21 eight finished second in their race with a crew comprising: Benjamin van den Berg, Jack Ivers, Joshua Murphy, Edward Findlay, Jake Polkinghorne, George Burney, Austin Reinehr, Oliver Scalzo with  Jess Rawolle coxing. 

The same result occurred with our women's under 21 eight comprising: Zara Bongiorno, Brigit Somerville, Olivia Nairn, Victoria Trentin, Abigail Cox, Jess Hawker, Remy McKay, Bronte Cullen and Summer Balla-Kellett coxing.

More luck in the Club four four events with Eliza Planincic, Louise Carr, Amy Baker and Sophie Coltman winning and Olivia Evans, Xanthe Hadfield, Hannah Magasanik and Henrietta Paterson second.

The men's club of Harry Cathcart, Lachlan Wilmot, Benedict Edmondson and Stephen O'Sullivan finished second.

Day 3 - 5th March 2023

The final day of the championships started with a second place for our women's A eight of Anastacia Pitsaris, Sophie Bolmat, Helena Skiathitis, Edie Benson, Emma Gebert, Jenisi Kelderman, Kate Duggan, Amritha Sidhu and Alexandra Legge coxing. 

Mike Kelly and Sam Wilson combined for a win in the men's B double.

Cate McNeil again showed that she does not mind racing successfully in categories above her age finishing second in the under 17 single.

The men's B eight won well and comprised Harry Rosen, Jason Nevins, Jarvis Cole, Michael Kelly, Nickolas Kronenburg, Sam Wilson, Hamish Roberts, Zachary Bowen and coxed by Jamie Hoopmann. The coach Jordan King who is on the left has been doing a superb job with the Club group.

The women's A quad finished a creditable third and comprised Amritha Sidhu, Jenisi Kelderman, Kasey Jobling, Kate Duggan and cox Alexandra Legge.

The men's A eight also came up trumps with a win with a crew comprising Dean Katsivelis, Benjamin Worth, Nickolas Kronenburg, Michael Kelly, Patrick Somerville, Sam Wilson, Max Neave, Zachary Bowen, Jamie and cox Hoopmann. Again pictured wth the crew is coach and organiser, Jordan King.

Cate McNeil doubled up in the Under 17 quad in a composite crew with Gippsland Grammar to notch up yet another win. Also in the picture is coach Kasey Jobling who raced for the Club at this regatta.

Danny Crofton and Nicholas Bartlett finished second in the B Pair.
