Whilst we have to wear masks in 2020 for reasons of the pandemic, what was the 1970 Australian eight thinking of by wearing masks back then?

The answer lies in an attempt to mirror altitude training. By limiting oxygen intake during training, the idea was to build up the red blood cell count to absorb more oxygen. We have no idea of whether it was a success or not. The crew made the final but only after a dispute with officials. Now that is yet another story for another day.  Photo courtesy of Michael Morgan.
