The World Championships entered day 7 with great promise but sadly not all was delivered. The Australian results were good but below what was desired.
Starting the day were the lightweight doubles in their respective final Cs. The women won their final C so in thirteenth place but the men finished fourth and so sixteenth. Both crews failed to qualify their boats for the Olympic Games.
Next was the B final in the men's pair with club member Fergus Hamilton teamimng up with Simoin Keenan. They finished second behind the Spanish crew to finish eighth, 0.4 second behind. They have qualified their boat for the Olympic Games.
The men's quad raced next in thier B final finishing fifth well out of the top 7 qualification places.
The PR3 mixed four with club member Jess Gallagher on board, finished fourth in their final A missing out of a podium finish.
Then the race we were all waiting for, the women's pair with club member Jess Morrison in the boat seat. Thye Dutch crew led from the start with a blistering first 500m to take a 1.55 second lead. The Australians were unable to claw back this lead that raced in second place the who way down the course. A silver medal was therefore their reward. I am sure that this will only inspire them to come back stronger next year.
The next three races for Australia were A finals in the two fours and the women's quad. All Australian crews finished in fifth place and so qualified for the Olympic Games. However all had hoped for a podium finish so there was disappointment all around. Club member Kat Werry raced in the two seat of the women's four.
All eyes are on the women's scull, PR1 scull and the two eights tonight to see how Australia will fair. Club members Hayley Verbunt, Paige Barr, Gus Widdicombe and Jack Robertson will be involved.
Good racing from all of us at Mercs.
